Why paid

Free registries fill up with bots, dead servers, and auto-generated slop. A $10 floor doesn't keep determined spammers out at any cost, but it keeps the baseline signal far cleaner than any free alternative.

The pattern is the same as domain names. ICANN charges for .com so .com means something. H-Index charges for listings so the listings mean something. The price IS the trust signal.
